Pssst! Did you hear? Homosexuals are marrying right now in San Francisco. The mayor is touting an equal protection law to justify it.

Does it hurt? Have you felt the repercussions in your paycheck, on your kid's educational television, or in the checkout lines in the supermarket? Have you begun questioning the quality of your relationships now that gays can share in marriage? Surely, they'll cause the whole state of California to slide off into the ocean, right?

NO! Now shut up, live your lives, and let others do the same.

I'm so pleased with recent news, but at the same time, it angers me incredibly that we've created a world where such things make headlines -- "Extra! Extra! People Win the Same Rights as the Other People!" It's hard to believe people will go to the trouble to hold another group down over differences that are so insignificant in daily life.

Awesome.

Yeah, I love reading the headlines... "More gays to wed in San Francisco", "Gay weddings continue, for now", blah blah. I'm glad that somewhere, someone had the guts to take a stand. Maybe others will follow their lead.

i can't believe there are people taking a stand and recommending a constitutional ammendment. it seems worse to me to be a legislator trying to ammend the constitution than to just be a gay basher and beat people up.

rick santorum, one of pennsylvania's own senators, is pursuing this ammendment. he's probably around somewhere near by at least on weekends. we need to pay him a visit and kick him in the shin. letter writing may be more appropriate, but i can't see it helping once someone is bent enough to actually think this legislation is the right thing to do.

I agree. Nothing angers me more than listening to someone blast people for "being gay", thinking it's some sort of disease or worse yet, a moral sin! They are treating them worse than second class citizens and see nothing wrong with it. Begs the question of who has the moral issues. And the fact that the media jumps all over this makes it even worse! Although it is doing a great service by bringing to the attention of the American people, it also segregates them and makes them look like second class citizens. Sort of counter productive in my views.

As for Santorum, I was one that supported the call for him to resign when he alikened homosexuality to beastiality and other "immoral acts" as he called them. He really needs to go! I did sign a petition and sent one of those online letters to him and got a very lame response (form letter), saying that he stood by what he said and said he was in alliance with his constituents etc, etc, etc.

The thing that scares me is that there is enough support for some sort of ban on gay marriage. Whether it be a constitutional amendment, or just state to state laws, polls are showing that a majority of people support some sort of ban. This whole debate is doing nothing but harm to the gay community. As it is, a lot of people have not "come out of the closet" in fear of persecution. This will force them to "come out" and support gay rights, which could lead to other, unwanted consequences. I really feel for them. You can almost aliken this to Hitler's persecution of the Jews in pre WWI Europe. (I hesitate to say that, but it is an unfounded persecution). Granted, there has not been a mass genocide (yet), but they are still being treated roughly the same.

I did find a site a few days ago where you can send an email to Dick Cheney's daughter urging her to support the gay community and denounce her father's support for an amendment. www.dearmary.com. (Mary Cheney is an open lesbian who supports gay civil rights).

There might not have been any sort of mass action taken against gays, but there certainly are a lot of hate crimes against those who are openly gay. I think these things will only increase as more and more attention is turned onto the subject.

People fear change, and while change is not always welcome it is necessary if we ever expect to be the great country we think we are.

i was just thinking about why so many people would be for legislation against gay marriage.. which makes no sense to teh those who posted here already, is justified in their mind just because its what they've been told all thier life, as where their parents, and thier parents before them and so on.. and once they teach that to their children its just solidified in their mind... i think its incouraging that free thinking is evolving enough to start to break the "my parents' parents' parents' parents said so" cycle but i recoginize that we still have a long way to go.. it was a mental leap to draw my own conclusions... dont ask me why it was so hard but all i know is it took forever.. one day i just kinda woke up and was like .. "hey.. thats not right".. Is there a way to facilitate free thinking or is it just something some come to and others dont?

Like Stacey said, it's fear of change. It's ignorance at its worst. I agree that it can be likened to Pre-WWII Nazi Germany's persecution of the Jews. Although, you have to realize there are a lot of differences, not that I feel any of them are significant to this matter.

I think mob mentality is scary. I think that politicians (puppets with voices) are scarier. I agree that it's scarier for our "leaders" are as close-minded as the rock-throwers. I think it's even more scary that we can call them leaders. Where are they leading us?

It seems more to me that they are not leading us anywhere, but trying to keep us in the same circles and cycles where we've existed... why support change, when what we have now is what has given them the power they have.

I would walk on D.C. with gays to support their rights. I don't think it's the government's business to decide these morality issues for us. If religions are going to, fine. That's their place. People can choose their church, much moreso than they can their government in the land in which we live.
